When one has a goal, it's encouraged that they set milestones- of course, attainable and realistic. Today I realized my milestone in the journey of Arabic language. Listening to a recitation of Surah Nur, I came across:
يُقَلِّبُ اللَّهُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِّأُوْلِي الْأَبْصَارِ
24:44 It is Allah Who alternates the Night and the Day: verily in these things is an instructive example for those who have vision!
The verb for "alternates" is ق ل ب. According to Hans Wehr dictionary, taqallub means alternation, transformation, change; variation; fluctuation
A similar, but different verse from Al-Imran:
تُولِجُ اللَّيْلَ فِي الْنَّهَارِ وَتُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِي اللَّيْلِ
3:27 Thou causest the night to pass into the day, and Thou causest the day to pass into the night.
The verb here is و ل ج . According to Hans Wehr dictionary, the form IV of this verb means "to make (something) enter (into something else)".
In English, both verses look similar. But this is Quran we are referring to. Every word is perfect in this sentence. No other word can replace it. As Sh Sohail of SunniPath explains in "Introduction to Quranic Sciences": Every word is fit perfectly in the verse, every word is measured and carefully selected to match the situation.
I've no doubts that these two verbs - though they mean almost the same - are different for a very significant reason
A milestone is my Arabic journey would be to understand how a difference is these two verbs causes a change in the meaning, the impact each one would have on the listener.

Masha Allah, a good example of cross-referencing and how Qur'anic verses complement each other - each coming with its own story and adding its own perspective on the same topic. I thought I'd check some other Qur'anic verses on the topic of the alternation between day and night, and this is what I came up with including the two you quoted, and as you can see I've grouped them:
إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَالْفُلْكِ الَّتِي تَجْرِي فِي الْبَحْرِ بِمَا يَنفَعُ النَّاسَ وَمَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ مِنَ السَّمَاء مِن مَّاء فَأَحْيَا بِهِ الأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا وَبَثَّ فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ وَتَصْرِيفِ الرِّيَاحِ وَالسَّحَابِ الْمُسَخَّرِ بَيْنَ السَّمَاء وَالأَرْضِ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ (البقرة 164 )

يُقَلِّبُ اللَّهُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِّأُوْلِي الْأَبْصَارِ (النور 44 )
Btw to the best of my knowledge اختلاف here does not mean "difference" but rather "alternation or succession" from whence the word خليفة (successor) and الخَلَف (successors) who come after the السَلَف (predecessors). This is also the meaning of خِلْفَة in one of the verses.
Sorry I just remembered the famous verse in Surah Yaseen:
وَآيَةٌ لَّهُمْ اللَّيْلُ نَسْلَخُ مِنْهُ النَّهَارَ فَإِذَا هُم مُّظْلِمُونَ (يس 37)
and then there are also the verse in Surah al-Layl (والليل إذا يغشى والنهار إذا تجلى ) & the verse in Surah al-Shams (والنهار إذا جلاّها والليل إذا يغشاها) which are a little different but are still related to the phenomenon of night and day and how they alternate.
Haffi, there's also another word- ukawwir that's used for day changing into night and vice-versa

39:5 He created the heavens and the earth in true (proportions): He makes the Night overlap the Day, and the Day overlap the Night: He has subjected the sun and the moon (to His law): Each one follows a course for a time appointed. Is not He the Exalted in Power - He Who forgives again and again?
